U.S. tariffs have made things tough for a lot of Canadian businesses. Rising costs, tighter margins, and new trade barriers have put pressure on companies across multiple industries. But this isn’t the end of your growth story. With the right tools and strategies, you can not only adapt—you can actually come out stronger. In this post, we’ll walk through practical, local digital marketing strategies to help you push through the noise, expand your reach, and keep your business moving forward. We’ve also put together a free downloadable PDF packed with links to government programs, funding opportunities, and digital tools to help you navigate this new landscape.

The Tariff Situation: What’s Going On?

If your business exports to the U.S., you’ve probably felt the squeeze. From steel and aluminum to lumber and agriculture, tariffs have hit a wide range of Canadian goods. And while you can’t control trade policy, you can control how your business responds. This is your chance to think differently, market smarter, and make digital part of your growth plan—not just a side project.

1. Go Direct-to-Consumer (DTC): Cut Out the Middlemen

One way to get around some of the costs and friction caused by tariffs? Sell directly to your customers. A strong DTC eCommerce setup can help you boost your margins, own your customer relationships, and reduce your reliance on traditional distribution channels. Try platforms like:

  • Shopify – Built for Canadian sellers and super scalable
  • WooCommerce – Great if you’re already using WordPress
  • Amazon – Easy entry into both Canadian and U.S. markets

Tips:
Use targeted ads to reach U.S. and international buyers. Be upfront about shipping and tariffs (people appreciate transparency). Retarget visitors who’ve shown interest but haven’t purchased yet

2. Don’t Rely on the U.S. Alone—Go Global

If tariffs are making U.S. exports tricky, now’s a great time to look at new markets. Europe, Asia-Pacific, even Latin America—these regions offer exciting opportunities if you’ve got the right digital presence.

How to get started:

  • Translate your website and product pages for key markets
  • Run Google Ads campaigns targeting high-intent international keywords
  • Create localized content (like blog posts and case studies) to build trust

Bonus: You can get up to $50,000 in funding through the CanExport program to support these efforts. Links in the toolkit.

3. Show Off Your “Made in Canada” Edge

Here’s something you do have going for you—being Canadian. Seriously. “Made in Canada” stands for quality, safety, sustainability, and reliability.

Use that to your advantage:

  • Tell your brand story on social media and your website
  • Highlight your Canadian values and what sets you apart
  • Use content marketing to build long-term customer loyalty

With the wave of patriotism that has resulted from the tariffs, Canadians are more emotionally involved in searching for the Canadian flag while shopping for products or services than ever before. This is the perfect opportunity for businesses to promote their Canadian identity in both retail and service-based industries.

Here are some local marketing strategies you can leverage for your business:

local marketing strategies you can leverage for your business

There has been an incredible strength of the community through the introduction of the tariffs, many who are actively researching Canadian products through phone apps. These identify products as either products of Canada, Canadian-made, assembled in Canada or otherwise so that Canadians, when given the choice, can make an informed decision on whether to support a Canadian product, if available. Look for ways of introducing your products on such apps as Shop Canadian, Buy Beaver, O SCANada, and Maple Scan.

Include the Canadian Identity in your Branding

Logos and favicons are your business’s first contact with a potential customer, so why not give your brand a little more clout by stating your Canadian identity at your first touchpoint. Also, you can add an emphasis on your Canadian connection and describe your story. If people can relate to your story they will be more likely to develop an emotional connection to your brand. If products are 100% made in Canada, clearly state so in the product description.

Build Local Engagement for a Community Presence

The best way to get recognition within your community is to get more involved. There are lots of ways that you can get involved for any business and budget size. Some examples could include local activities, get involved or host local community events, advocate for community issues, help beautify your community, encourage employees to volunteer, and collaborate with other local businesses.

Local SEO Strategies for Canadian Businesses

We have also seen an unprecedented amount of talk about products that are made in Canada. This has also transpired throughout the web with searches for the keyword “Canadian Products”. According to SEM Rush, these searches have increased 100x since the introduction of the tariffs.

Building a local SEO strategy that incorporates a variety of high traffic keywords within this theme can significantly help your website traffic, gain more online visibility and ultimately increase sales. Think of these trends as potentially lost opportunities that you could be missing out on.

Include Local Directories as Part of Your Local Marketing

Local directories can be a huge boost for your local SEO. Directories, such as Yellow Pages, often appear first on search engines, and so if you are a small business and are looking to appear at the top of searches, this can be a great opportunity. It is also a solid backlink strategy to use. Just make sure that you are including your website within the profile, and keep track of which ones you are registering so you can keep track of your login info for each. If ever you want to change your profile, you’ll need these handy.

Build a Social Following with Local Trends

There is a whole community of people and influencers who are actively supporting local businesses. It would be in everyone’s best interest to make yourself more visible to those who are actively looking and supporting local businesses. Hashtags are a way to build your visibility within your community. Think of it as hopping onto a wagon that is already moving vs. having to pull one on your own without any momentum. Hashtags can make all the difference in gaining visibility. In my last article, Riding the Content Marketing Wave I talked a lot about how hashtags work and the importance of using them in a social strategy. Leveraging these hashtags is a great way of gaining visibility without having to pay out.

Implement Strategies for Local SEO Searches

Implementing a local SEO search strategy can give you many advantages over the international market, but if you’re not appearing in those local searches, it might seem a bit of an elusive tactic to implement. It’s not always so obvious to most businesses, but here are a few ways that you can appear in more local searches.

Firstly, search engine algorithms are designed to ensure that search results are most relevant to the user locally. Search results tend to favour local brands if the information is available. But to be able to appear in local search results, you need to provide that information to Google, and that’s where the Google Business Profile comes in. For search engines to get your location information, you would need to fill out your Google Business Profile.

Another tactic to implement in your local SEO search strategy would be to include your location in some landing pages alongside keywords that potential leads would be using. For example, you could add a landing page that includes “Montreal curtains store” to appear in searches that people will be doing for “Montreal curtain stores” or curtain “stores near me”. This isn’t just about logos and flags—it’s about connecting with people who care about how and where their products are made.

4. B2B Digital Marketing: Go Beyond Cold Calls

If your business is more B2B than retail, digital is still your best friend. Try:

  • LinkedIn Ads to get in front of decision-makers
  • Offering free resources (like guides, checklists, or whitepapers) in exchange for emails
  • Hosting webinars or demos to connect with prospects around the world
  • Using a CRM to track leads and automate follow-ups

These tools aren’t just for big companies—you can use them no matter your size or budget.
